I thought it would be a cool way to keep you informed about things leading up to our 2 year celebration bash on April 15th. http://www.bitterzoet.com/#/agenda/620

flyer 2 year celebration bash @ bitterzoet

In this first episode I'll try and give you a very short update on the events that occured between between November 2009 and today.

Well, first of all, we've had a few nice parties going on. Pageturner has been running increasingly smooth in the past 5 months, which is a blessing. We've had some great performances by artists such as Shaking Godspeed, Pien Feith, Uinko, Avant La Lettre, Chop Wood, RaaskalBOMfukkerz, Spoelstra, DS-10 Dominator, The Secret Love Parade *takes deep breath*, The Woodwards, Lake Montgomery, ACG Vianen, Boris de Jong, Circus Circus Casino and I Am Oak. Just to name a few.

Boris de Jong became our new literary coördinator, while Bas and me worried about production and music programming. Trevor Hammer kept on rocking as our go-to technical genius.

http://www.cafepakhuiswilhelmina.nl/

De Nachtbrakers did another party at ACU in Utrecht, and one at P60 in Amstelveen. While the latter was more of an unlucky experiment, the event at ACU was a blast. I really enjoy putting on shows there: Martijn de Jong of ACU is always a great help in these things, and the crowds are ever appreciative. I also got to do another month of the "Witte Gei't" behind-bar sessions at De Nieuwe Anita in march, which was incredible as always.

www.myspace.com/denachtbrakers

Performing were (among others) The Surs, Lee Mason, The Benelux, Most Unpleasant Men, Mindpark, Signe Tollefsen, NewYX, Dress and we had the scoop of the first ever performance of Bird On The Wire!

Another big thing (as you may have noticed) was my enthusiasm for Popronde last year. Not one, but TWO of my blogposts actually made it to their evaluation report, which is kinda fun. My ugly blog amongs the likes of Musicfrom.nl, 3voor12 etc.

But that's not the big news. I was regularly running into Mischa van den Ouweland, chief of programming @ Popwaarts during Popronde. I met with him and Bas Broeder, Popwaarts' director, several times. This led to an invitation to figure out a plan that could lead to a full-fledged popronde in Amsterdam (!!!). Apparently they liked my plan, which means I know get to call myself coördinator Popronde Amsterdam. I'm really proud, even though I still have to prove myself worthy of the title, off course! http://www.popronde.nl/

I've also been exploiting my writing talents at Hard//Hoofd, a online magazine with literary, journalistic, auditive and visual content, despite the voluntary nature of it's contributors and editors. It's been fun working with this zealous bunch. Making something out of life is a matter of convictions, of believing in something. These people are believers. Check it out at: http://www.hardhoofd.com/

Furthermore I've been meeting some new friends in the past months. Lisa de Jongh and Victor Ulijn of Funny Trees Bookings two fine booking agents with the heart in the right place, young Eyal van der Reep of Club Cornflakes, a talented young writer and music promoter in Amsterdam. I've also gotten really impressed with the guys from NON Records, most notably Bear Damen. NON records (whom Amsterdam residents may know from their bright orange posters) is a record label with a focus on vintage electronica with a distinctive live feel. The Benelux and Palmbomen are prominent artists on their roster. They've put on their first label night @ Melkweg last month, which was very impressive.

Keep a tab on all of these guys: they're out to do great things!

So far for the update from the past few months: tomorrow I will be discussing some of the more exact plans for the party.

Cheers, love,

Jasper P. Nachtbraker

Popronde Eindhoven: Friday night’s allright for music!

Tradition tells us Eindhoven is the place where the annual Popronde travelling festival rests its case. Last year featured the first ‘guerillagig’ at the afterparty: the most celebrated, active band at the Popronde receives their credit in the form of a closing argument.

But not before seeing The Secret Love Parade in top form at TAC (one of my favorite places in the world) and Chinup dedicating a song to yours truly at La Folie. They got things off to a good start! Oh yeah, Wooden Constructions at Begijntje was also pretty perfect. One of my favourite Popronde Locations: it always gets crazy in there, last year with Daily Bread, this year with these hard funking gentlemen. And it's just a tiny little hellhole bar downtown.

Chinup

This year, things at Effenaar turned out a bit different. As much as 5 bands (4 planned guerrilla perfomance, and 1 act that got guerrilla on the guerrilla) rocked the stage of the Effenaar’s small hall.

Lola Kite were the closing act of the regular programme, and played a solid set, despite being cut short before the hits were unleashed upon the audience. It marked the beginning of a chaotic 2-hour celebration of everything good (well maybe some bad, too) about music anno 2009.

a girl with Arthur von Berg's guitar

First up were The Mad Trist. They are perhaps the true winners of this year’s edition, having played pretty much exclusively in the more prolific clubs participating in Popronde. Set-up and line-check seem very frantic – they’re on a strict schedule. After the first song the guys of Avant La Lettre –the official Popronde winners, with 13/23- jump on stage armed to the teeth with all kinds of percussion to add to the second and last song of The Mad Trist. After this, both bands (who have become great friends over the past few months) switch positions, Avant La Lettre playing a song with The Mad Trist banging on pretty much everything. This wrapped up the rock section of the evening –or so I thought- A joy to the ear and eye alike.

Arthur (The Mad Trist) & Laurens (Avant La Lettre), killer frontmen.
And pretty wasted..

onstage chaos: beatrings, cowbells, drumsticks and happy people

Meanwhile, The Benelux had been setting up frantically on both sides of the stage. This is not a typical plug and play band.. Milan Mes’s weird electronics, drum machines and Sven Hamerpagt’s numerous pedalboards require some attention from the soundman. Still, they pull of 3 songs with a 5 minute line check. Quite an achievement for these avant-garde electrofunkateers.

By the time their set ended, I’ve ended up wandering backstage with Laurens from Avant La Lettre looking for a free beer. I know pretty much everone there, and it’s a blissful chaos. There are about 30 people backstage smoking, drinking and laughing about the nights insane proceedings. I congratulate Milan with another fine performance, he’s still in a state of confusion over what just happened.

Jaap of The Benelux keeping with the percussion theme

I listen to Wooden Constructions with the rest of the bands backstage. They deliver a fine set as always. They’re The Benelux twisted inside out – it doesn’t matter where they play, they can always rely on their simple but effective funkpunkfunk and hyperactive leadsinger Gover to come out on top of things.

backstage mayhem: random bandmembers from all types of acts

Backstage, there’s some drunken commotion. Lost Bear wishes to play a song as well. 5 out of 7 are there, so they should be able to work it out. Before anyone is clear as to what’s going on, they’re onstage borrowing the Wooden Constructions’ gear and heading into one of their indie-hardcore anthems. The Effenaar, stressed out with all this madness cuts Lost Bear stagecrash short and pulls the plug. Effenaar personnel continues to kick everybody out backstage and clears the hall… leaving a lot of slightly confused drunken musicians in the lobby.

And with that it was over. Popronde has come to an end, at least this year. Watch this space for my predictions of next year's Popronde 2010, coming soon!

love,

Jasper P. I’m in my kitchen, figuring out where monday went. I Am Oak is on my speakers again. What a great new artist! Very enjoyable indeed.

So what happened to me this weekend, causing monday to disappear in the fog? It felt like somewhat of a renaissance. After being sick for a week-and-a-half and the struggle to get back on track work and health wise, it was about time for a weekend like this.

Prologue
Things started when I proposed a friday-afternoon drink on a thursday. My friend and me both felt like ending the week a day early, so downed more drinks than is recommendable at 4.30 in the afternoon. Especially considering the work ahead of me this weekend. Nevertheless, positive anticipation about things to come made me feel very logical about drinking.

So, on to my nighttime activities. I’m at Melkweg for the fifth birthday of Subbacultcha!, one of the great underground promoters in the Netherlands. Some 15 bands in the old hall and theater of Melkweg. And a lot of familiar people! From Les Singes to Gram to Snowstar Records to Pien Feith to ‘Flip met de hoed’, supporters of underground from all corners of the industry/country were there to show their support.

Excellent shows by Eklin, Saelors, Skeletons (USA) and especially an amazing performance by Wooden Constructions (see pic below) made it a night to remember. It reminded me I’m just getting started, and have a lot to learn.

Wooden Constructions on a roll

D-day, and then, saturday
Friday was D-day. My first Circus Nachtbrakers event in Utrecht (travelling event). We got some good press beforehand and people at ACU were enthousiastic. There were some great performances, positive audience reviews and great atmosphere all together. Thanks to LEE MASON, JOSHUA B., MINDPARK, SAELORS and LOST BEAR for getting Nachtbrakers off to a flying start in Utrecht.

Obviously, small parties with no end dig deep into your system. Even at my age. My friends Michel, Jerry and myself quite the hellride back to Amsterdam. Ending up in a strange place by myself, drunk, at 7am implies a great night. It also implies a massive hangover, and no chance of a change of clothes before you’re actually home.

Saelors
Saelors' Alexandra with a familiar bass: Mine!
Mindpark
Lee Mason

Gino of Lost Bear banging on a thrashcan with the whole smoking room singing harmony.

What's next, hugging trees?

So, saturday was dominated by post-party recovery. But there was no time for that! I had another party to produce. MuseumNachtBrakers was my first attempt at programming a night at Delicatessen, Amsterdam’s ‘shop for the taste of art & culture’

It turned out to be a nice, quiet evening dominated by wonderful (solo-)performance by UINKO, MIKA AKIMEN and GERHARDT. It was the kind of uncomplicated atmosphere you would prefer from a day of recovering. I had some drinks, played some music (Ladycop, Most Unpleasant Men, The Black Atlantic, Awkward I, Chop Wood to name a few), got some gifts (some vynil singles and that damn fine I Am Oak record!) and had some laughs. Lovely!

Sunday Afthermath

So, then it was sunday. After 3 days of madness, I couldn’t really move. I dragged my sorry ass to Delicatessen again for Bas’ birthday, which was a nice, chilled out event. I played along to a tune of Pfaff, met Marien of Moss for the first time in music and person. But I was dog tired. Bas’ birthday soup helped me out, but I was on my last legs.

My ‘road to ruin’ wasn’t over yet, though. I had another party to attend. Having just been invited to write for Hard//Hoofd internet magazine, I didn’t want to miss out on their Launch Party at Pakhuis Wilhelmina. It’s kind of the next big thing, or at least that’s what people were saying.

Based on the night, these people were quite right in saying so! A good 200+ crowd at Wilhelmina is a real achievement. Add to that some fucking awesome performances by Van Dijck Sisters, Chinup, Herman In Een Bakje Geitenkwark, Lola Kite and Fatah “El Moustache” Morgana, and a lot of familiar faces (again): Another night to remember, then. The energy of so many people in high spirits really kept me going. It made me completely forget about sleeping.

Early birds singing.... again.

In the end, I was one of the last people out, waited for the nightbus, to arrive at my bed at 4-something. As I closed my eyes the early birds were singing. Again. No More Loud Music! Please! I’ve had enough of this ruckus, I want to sleep.

Thanks again to everyone I've laughed with, listened to, danced to and with, shared with and loved this weekend. It was good to meet you, or see you again. Let's keep this up! Happiness is bliss and I'm enjoying every second.

love,

Jasper P. Respect! They've sucked the marrow out of life. It just goes to show that 1 in 3 Popronde acts really benefits from this great initiative. Here's the list:

Avant La Lettre
Bimbo Electrico
BluefisH
Bradley's Circus
Chef' Special
Chinup
Early Adopters
Fabiana Dammers
Farida Merville
Florian Wolff
Groover
Landmark 105
Les Singes
Lola Kite
Most Unpleasant Men
Pony Pack
Rebelle
Soulkikker
The Benelux
The Blue Shades
The Dust Bowl Drifters
The Heyz
The Killer Bananazz
The Mad Trist
The Secret Love Parade
This Is Total War
Tommy Ebben
Tududuh
Uncle Frankle
William Wixley
Winnie
Wooden Constructions

2nd semi-final Grote Prijs van Nederland/Singer-Songwriter

Den Haag, september 13

Today the Grote Prijs van Nederland resides in Den Haag (The Hague), for the 2nd semi-final of the singer-songwriter competition. Eefje de Visser won the jury- and audience prize with her charming presence, witty song lyrics (in Dutch!) and interesting arrangements. Other contestants were Bart Oostindie, Steffen Morrison and Celine Cairo.

The first thing I want to mention is how cool it is to have a fold-up bike. I arrived at Den Haag Holland Spoor train station half an hour before the show, and was able to find my way to the venue in a city unbeknownst to me.

The Bike

Gebouw De Ruimtevaart is the scene for tonight’s show. Again, Rick Treffers (my boss at Live In The Living) has done an excellent job scouting locations. The “squatter-turned-cultural hub” is again, very atmospheric setting for this 2nd semi-final.

I’m greeted by Rebecca (one of the jurors), Bas and Moos (the production crew). They’re eagerly awaiting the other 2 jurors, who are arriving at the venue just (but only just) in time for the show. Inside there’s a nice bar. I grab a beer, take a look around the venue and greet some more familiar faces.

Bar with beers and barmaid

Tonight’s programme is pretty varied: All contestants are considered solo-projects, but with very different flavours and accompaniment. Rick opens the night with his usually dry humour and quirky remarks. He’s good with people, a quality I always admire. He’s completely comfortable in his role as presenter.

Rick with coffeecup

First act: Steffen Morrison, a soulsinger-songwriter. Much more than with Brown Hill there’s actual hooks and melodies in his songs, it’s not just a vehicle for his vocal prowess. He reminds me a little bit of Seal. There’s also a lot of interaction between the musicians, which is nice. He’s also very aware that soul is about rhythm: percussion and sharp piano play give a lot of definition. A good performance.
Steffen Morrison Myspace

Bart Oostindie is the token solo-performer for the evening. He looks a little bit like a teddybear, fuzzy beard and gentle manners. He has a nice warm voice and guitar skills to match. Again, a soulful musician. His lyrics aren’t very convincing though, and his music lacks immediacy. It’s just a little too casual.
Bart Oostindie on Myspace

During the break I suddenly notice Frank (stickman with Kyteman’s Hiphop Orkest and Most Unpleasant Men) and Merijn (bassplayer with Most Unpleasant Men) entering the room. They’re playing with Eefje. I suddenly realise that contrary to the other acts, I have no idea what to expect from her. A few moments later Robin (Block) and Jaïr walk in. They’re playing during the jury deliberations.

But first, Celine Cairo takes the stage. This young talent has won a few contests already and is known as a talented pop-singer. But I’m not digging it. From her voice to her guitar play, lyrics and stage presence: It’s more Idols than Grote Prijs. She brought a violinist and bass player, but they’re not really adding to the music. I wander into the backstage area to grab another beer.
Celine Cairo's Myspace

Than, Eefje de Visser. Frank promised me some drum ‘n bass (with brushes!), so I’m expecting anything. Eefje turns out to be the composer of short, quirky songs with a wonderful perspective on everyday life. She’s playing a home game (Haagse glorie), and has more than 30 people supporting her tonight. Frank is in great shape adding percussion and drums to Eefje’s songs. His gamelan-like additions to the first song are great, his drumbeats on “Hartslag” (a hit among the supporters) downright spectacular. Eefje holds her own playing solo as well. Very impressive.
Eefje on Myspace

blurry Merijn (double bass) and Eefje (vocals/guitar)

Robin and Jaïr (Julien is in Indonesia) from Robin Block then come on to perform a loose duo-set. It feels quite different from their trio stuff. Lighter. Two new songs (Rain, Prisoners), and a bunch of different choices make it a very enjoyable experience for the Robin Block die-hards.
Robin Block Myspace

Robin & Jaïr

After the jury presentation, I catch up with Rick a little bit while people crowd the bar for the last few beers. A few people in the crowd approach Rick offering their livingroom: good news! Den Haag is a great city for music and having some more shows here would be good for business.

There’s no time to stick around though. I need to get back to the station and get some FOOD! Dinner kind of slipped my mind tonight. Rick notices my appetite for the crisps backstage and suggests a Turkish place across the street from the station. In the train I try to focus on some article for school (I do try and educate myself from time to time), but it’s hard trying to be intelligent while digesting a handful of beers, a Turkish pizza with döner (great tip Rick!), and a nice evening. Ah well, tomorrow is another day.

'lekker!'

Jasper P. I’m full of anticipation for the first regular Popronde of the year. Nijmegen is the perfect place for these type of events: it’s a city full of leftwing, progressive students (or so they claim), and everything in the center is at comfortable walking distance. It’s bound to be a good night: there are plenty of bands old and new to check out, and plenty of familiar (Amsterdam) folks around.

18.45: Train enters Nijmegen station. I’m 15 minutes ahead of schedule. Don’t ask me why – I’m usually half an hour late to any given appointment. I spend the next hour looking for a place in Nijmegen with free Wi-fi so I can post yesterday’s blog. In the end I find a T-mobile Hotspot at a McDonald’s... it was my last resort.

19.45: I arrive at Merleyn, the main pop venue participating in Popronde Nijmegen this year. I’ve heard a lot about it, but I’ve never been there before. It turns out to be a cosy little place with about 200 people able to fit in the venue.

Outside, I greet Monique & Dirk from Popronde Eindhoven and the guys from Avant La Lettre. Suprised to see me? Well get used to it.

20.00: Inside Merleyn. Florian Wolff is soundchecking. I meet Popronde-guru Misha (again, heard a lot about but never met before), and say hi to Ivo from W2. Rosa and Willem from Les Singes are also there, but leave early for their soundcheck.

Florian Wolff turns out to be a radio-friendly Jack Johnson soundalike. It’s well done, but pleeeeease, put a little more creativity in the mix guys.
Florian Wolff's Myspace

20.30: In In De Blaauwe Hand, the oldest (and perhaps, smallest) café in town. I sit at the bar with an aunt for a cup of tea, Harmen and Maarten from Chinup are also there. Nice chaps.

21.00: The Secret Love Parade arrives at the café. They’re on later, but Robin Block (due 21.30) is still nowhere to be found. Popronde-employee Irena is getting nervous. She asks me if I could call the guys. Sure! Always happy to help.

21.25: Finally, Robin, Jaïr and Julien charge into the venue. It’s a quick set-up, and in 10 minutes the first notes of Opus fills the café. They’re in good form, very alert from all the pressure to get to the venue in time.
Robin Block on Myspace

21.45 I’m on my way again, eager to check out Tiger Counter Of Drog Orkestar again. I only caught a few songs in Amsterdam (see Popronde Preview blog), so didn’t get a full picture. They play this nice squatter-type place. It’s nice and dark, just stroboscope lighting and bizarre psychedelic electropunk. “This could be a hit on Pageturner”. They’ve got free CD’s which is cool. I see Misha for the third time. He’s already seen 8 bands tonight. It comes with experience I guess..
TCODO Myspace

Tiger Counter Of Dog Orkestar in dark squatter venue

22.00 I wander into another café and talk to Rocco from De Staat. They’re off tonight, which is a delightful coincidence. I suggest Supercity as a good next act to check out. Daybroke, the band playing can’t hold my attention for long. They’re playing 90’s grunge/punkrock stuff. It’s kind of bland.
Myspace Daybroke

22.30 Back to the Grote Markt, to café Moenen where Tommy Ebben is playing. It’s blues, folk and rock. Pretty traditional stuff, but brought with taste. I’m liking Tommy’s voice. It doesn’t feel like old folks music at all, but in the end it’s a little too much craftsmanship, too little edge. Kim Janssen from The Black Atlantic is also there, which is a surprise. He travelled from Groningen with Johnny Cage, a band that’s on later. I make a note, then take off. We’re on a tight schedule here!
Tommy Ebben on Myspace

Where to go next?

22.50 In De Blaauwe Hand. The Secret Love Parade is on. I’ve seen the girls quite a few times before, they’re good friends. Their indiefolk works well in this environment. They’re overjoyed, their debut album is finished a few days ago.
TSLP Myspace

23.10 On my way to the next band, I pass by a temp-agency which has a big lit sign that says “unique starring Van Velzen”. I think to myself how happy I am he’s not actually here to spoil the popronde with mainstream shit.

Van Velzen

23.15 At café De Plak. Outside the boys from Lola Kite are relaxing on the terrace. They’re on later. Inside Johnny Cage is playing a nice set considering the circumstances. Their symphonic “New York” indie (eq. Grizzly Bear, MGMT, Yeasayer) is nice. I’m digging the stretched out post-rock like song structures. Nice vocal harmonies as well. I note the bassplayer is somewhat of an anti-hero, which is really cool somehow. He reminds me of Jack Black.
Johnny Cage Myspace Page (rhyme:))

23.30 While Kim is getting me a beer, I’m called up by Robin B. They’re my ride home and ready to go. I was hoping they would stick around a little longer: I still wanted to see either Chinup or The Mad Trist before I left. No time for that now. I totally forgot the beer Kim was getting me (Sorry dude!) and hurry to where the car is parked. It’s been quite night.

In the end you can never see it all. So here’s everyone I’ve missed, but shouldn’t have. Big up!
• The Mad Trist
• Avant La Lettre
• Lola Kite
• Les Singes
• LEFT
• Supercity
• Oceana Company
• Wooden Constructions
• Chinup

Jasper P. This year's Lust For Life Festival presented by Eindhoven theatre formation United-C included nude dancing, girls in broken glass, music of all kinds, bloody people and sushi to name a few. Yes, this is not a normal night out for the Eindhoven crowd. It was wild.

While dance-performances are not something I’d dare to make comments about – I have no knowledge of it whatsoever- Their insanity, wonderful approach to movement, a keen eye for tension building and stern scepticism towards society is something I can relate to.

Another thing that I can relate to is the music. It goes from guitar-driven pieces to string quartets to techno to ambient noize. And all of it comes from the same mind. Ralph dislikes the attention, but based on tonight he deserves all the credit.

• He worked out his first classical string quartet. And it held it’s own. For a rock musician with no theoretical background, it’s quite an achievement. Even just holding up working with posh classical musicians... pfew!
• His band Mindpark (whom we know from last february’s sessions behind bar at De Nieuwe Anita) performed pieces old and new, intertwined with theatrical and dance-performances. Their instrumental “Manic” with a fiery duet from a dancing couple was a highlight of the evening.

"Manic"

• Signe Tollefsen was joined by part of the band, and Ralph played bass. Being a bass player myself I felt quite jealous. I’d eat my left shoe to play with Signe, one of my all-time favourite singers. I’d eat my right shoe to be able to play guitar, keys, bass, drums and vocals with such chilled out attitude. He makes it look easy. And he’s a small dude with a big bass, which is always cute I’ve been told.

But tonight Signe Tollefsen outplayed everybody. She turned out to be the perfect closing act for the evening. Her voice, intense performance and great song material (Hooked, King of the Fire) are usually enough to make the crowd go crazy, but pair her up with Mindpark’s virtuous drums and subdued guitar noize and something happens... It just goes to show their enormous musicality and taste.

Signe is joined on stage again by the band for her releaseparty at the Paradiso, september 25th... You should be there!

Mindpark is playing Pageturner oktober 15th and ACU in Utrecht as part of Circus Nachtbrakers november 6th.

LINKS
United-C website
Signe Tollefsen Myspace
Mindpark Myspace

Livingroom show Ham Radio Communications

The Black Atlantic

Last night Ham Radio Communications hosted a livingroom concert in a beautiful appartment in Amsterdam-Zuid. Geert van de Velde, the founder of the company is a big livingroom concert enthusiast and has been doing some great things from his base in Groningen, including programming for Noorderzon and Noorderslag festivals.

To report the release of their album "Reverence For Fallen Trees", Geert and his band The Black Atlantic have put together a nationwide livingroom tour, playing alongside longtime friends Rue Royale, an English/American musical couple residing in Birmingham, UK. The line-up was completed by our longtime friend Awkward I, who was also the host for this evening.

De Nachtbrakers had a great night. Rue Royale served the audience to a very fascinating set, full of subdued guitar-strumming, unusual arrangements, and hushed vocal harmonies. Their voices were matched to perfection. A joy to the ear.

Awkward I was clearly a bit knackered from his exhausting touring schedule of late. He gave his bandmates a night off and managed to pull of a captivating set - albeit with quite some effort. Especially Sea Life and Let's Get Ready To Die really held their own in a solo version. Djurre and his band will be releasing their debut-album "I Really Should Whisper" (on the Excelsior Recordings label) september 30th at the Paradiso in Amsterdam.

The Black Atlantic delivered an unconventional (for livingroom standards) but very beautiful set. Their band sound, ranging from yukelele and flute to strong percussion and piano elements, was a real treat. Lead singer Geert is a charismatic performer, and the dynamics in the repertoire - which reminded us of Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire but also The Nits - made this a concert to remembering. They really stretched the limits of what you can do in a livingroom. A very memorable performance. The official releaseparty for their album is september 25th during "Vette Analoge Shit" (the event of their label Beep!Beep!Back Up The Truck). It's held at dB's in Utrecht.

LINKS
artists
Rue Royale Myspace
Awkward I Myspace
The Black Atlantic
promoter
Ham Radio Communications

Semi-Final #1 Grote Prijs >Singer-Songwriter

Sunday, September 6
Location: Boerderij Roodnoot, a farm on the outskirts of Utrecht. Courtesy of Festivalinfo.nl LINK

Last night De Nachtbrakers ventured deep in the city centre to uncover the events taking place at the Popronde kick-off party at Sugar Factory. Though normally not a place we would normally be found (Leidseplein was conquered by tourists long ago), we put the bike on two chain locks, and wander into the mayhem, not knowing what we'll find.

Well, it turns out to be a half-empty Sugar Factory. Apparently Popronde lacks a good audience outreach in Amsterdam. People whispering of Amsterdam as 'not being the right place for Popronde' might be right. There's too much to do here! It means that events that are either free or not properly advertised are automatically frowned upon by the general audience.

It's a good night nonetheless. We walk in halfway through the set of The Mad Trist. This Maastricht-based band immediately catches the attention. A true wall of sound is being blasted off the stage, into the audience. The Mad Trist showers us with razorsharp grooverock, brought with swagger and musical expertise. These guys know what they're doing. They're recording their debut album with Torre Florim (De Staat) at the moment, a very promising outlook!
Popronde CD: Yes, track #06
Popronde appearances: 8 confirmed so far (incl. Each member is a solid instrumentalist, but the music lacks originality. The singer's voice is allright, but it sounds all too familiar. Oh yeah, the name comes from a hotelroom Janis Joplin used to live. I don't see the connection?
Popronde CD: nope
Popronde appearances: 8 so far.
Landmark 105 on Myspace

The next band to perform is Avant La Lettre. "complex music" we're promised by the announcer. Well, they're certainly not taking the easy way out. The band (a five piece with two guitars and synth-whizzkid) happily mixes and matches a dozen layers in each song. The comparison with dEUS I hear around me I find a little dangerous. I'd rather compare them to Stuurbaard Bakkebaard (yes I am a patriot), with a touch of Bloc Party.
While being very creative and energetic, a few things still need to be sorted. Stage presence for instance. It feels a little like watching three bands in one. Everyone is very much caught up in their own things. Sound balance is another. This music deserves a proper soundcheck. There were a few irritating bits that really took your mind of the music (that synth!). Still, a very intruiging band.
Popronde CD: Yes, track #01
Popronde appearances: 12(!) so far (incl. With a touch of surf guitar. The combination of scratches, live-drums, samples, guitar and synths is quite good. But not more than that. The main character in the band (on guitar) is a bit of a shabby character. He doesn't seem very interested in pleasing the crowd at all. It's all a bit too casual for my own taste.
Popronde CD: nope
Popronde appearances: 6 so far
Solo Moderna on Myspace

Wooden Constructions hail from Amsterdam. And are perhaps the most entertaining act this Popronde! The music takes what it needs from LCD Soundsystem, Roxy Music and Joy Division. It's dancemusic without synthesizers or drumbeats. Funky, distorted basslines, minimalistic guitar framing, sharp drumming, cowbell and a singer who can give "Howling" Pelle Almquist of The Hives a run for his money. What a stamina! What a madness! From almost Beastie Boys like rap to dark Depeche Mode like lines, it's all good. At the end of the show he's sweating his ass off. But leaves the room in awe.
Popronde CD: nope
Popronde appearances: 7 so far (incl. Vera, Rotown)
Wooden Constructions Myspace

Tiger Counter Of Drog Orkestar: Nothing can be derived from the name. The music gives a better impression. It's punk, it's pop, it's noize. It's T.Raumschmiere without drums. Old synths, guitarnoize, and some processed beats are all they need to blow the roof of any venue. They won't appeal to everyone, but they sure are awesome to those who like things fucked up & danceable. They only have 2 appearances confirmed so far. So calling all popronde agents: Give these guys a break dudes!
Popronde CD: nope
Popronde appearances: 2 so far
TCODO on Myspace

Bimbo Electrico is the last act we catch before we leave. An electronic act: just a shabby guy with a beerbelly behind a laptop and a short-haired peroxide blond with an armycoat. Surprise! It's eighties electrowave! It's a pretty decent show though. If you leave the 40-something guy behind the laptop out of the picture. And if the dancer would be really hot (instead of kind-of-hot, but not really hot). The performance does take a suprising turn when we're suddenly treated to some hardcore beats. De Nachtbrakers were there to check out the goods.

First of all, let's start by giving credit to those deserving: Ro Halfhide, founder of the ASG is one of the most passionate promoters of music I've ever seen. It's mostly his doing that the ASG has gotten the esteem and value it has now. It's a true center for development of songwriter-talent.

Unfortunately, Lake Montgomery had to cancel her performance yesterday due to personal circumstances. A real shame -she is THE next big thing in the singer-songwriter scene. A unique voice, and a very personal approach to performance. We wish her strength in hard times.

On to the next performer then: Case Mayfield. Earnest, hard-working fellow, this Case. After causing quite some exciting on his last project, The Alphabet Street Tour, he is the main organiser for this evening.
But there is more to this fellow. He has a charming presence, a good voice and guitar skills to match and he lacks the pretentions that makes some songwriters a real nuisance. Unfortunately, in a way, it is also his downfall. His personality on stage is enjoyable, but not very moving.
Luckily, this young lad has time enough to grow and when he does, he might just be the guy to surpass his peers and conquer the world. Case calls it fear, I call it talent!
Case' myspace

"Just sit her down behind the piano and let her pour all her misery, anger, hope, punchlines, doubt and irony over you. With her in-your-face songs and podium presence she can leave any room in awe, and slightly uncomfortable..."
This is what we said last february about Anne Roos Rosa De Carvalho. In the meanwhile, she has expanded her collaboration with cellist Mascha van Nieuwkerk, to great effect. These two classically trained musicians have truly found eachother. With a love for the theatrical, witty lyrics, and Anne's dry humour, they are a force to be reckoned with. Based upon this performance, it is hard to believe they were left out of the selection for the semi-finals of the 'Grote Prijs'
Anne's Myspace

The Secret Love Parade then. guitarist Janna announces they'll be playing "five songs in modest setting". This means: without the electronics. A wise decision? I'm not sure. Avoiding the fuss of having to soundcheck keyboards, guitars, voices and electronics in a few minutes could be considered a good thing. But without the beat, their electronic folkpop lacks definition.
This aside, singer/keyboard player Aino seems nervous somehow. During the few thank you's she utters during the set she appears to be out of breath. Still, the girls are still quite a charming duo, and their sound is still very distinctive. Their album will be out next week; something to look forward to!
TSLP Myspace

Next up: The Woodwards, one of the finalists in the Grote Prijs' songwriters competition last year. He has certainly developed since then: he seems in high spirit. Tonight he is joined by back up singers the Ursula Peterson Trio (2 out of 3), which add lively backing vocals to his dark baritone. They seem a little unrehearsed (especially on Ursula Peterson), but it doesn't kill the atmosphere. Far from it! There's a great energy on stage, even though licquor consumption is taking it's toll on the attention span of the audience. Luckily, the single I Wanna Woman recaptures the attention just in time. An honest, truly beautiful hommage to love.
The Woodwards on Myspace

Finally, Chinup closes the evening with an energetic set. It's the only real band playing tonight. On stage, we find singer-songwriters Reaganesk on guitar, Ro Halfhide and M-Jo on percussion and a bassplayer. But it's Chinup leading the dance. His rough-edged, punky folkbeat is a great closing act. Everybody's up for a little more loud music, and the band is prepared to deliver. Despite strings breaking, the performance was great. Strong songs (simple but effective), the element of surprise (I didn't expect like this) and the danceability: a very strong move from the organisation. In of the final songs, Chinup himself shows his rock and roll spirit with actual grunting, followed by ripping it up on his acoustic guitar. Nice one, dude!
Chinup Myspace

All in all, the Amsterdam Songwriters Guild shows it's ready and able to do what it's been doing for years: delivering great songwriters to the Dutch music scene. And then, the world.

Link: www.bitterzoet.com (venue) www.myspace.com/asgsongwriters (promoter)

Back to life!

Hello folks,

This blog has come back to life. It kind of died after a few minor roadbumps in De Nachtbrakers' personal lives. Between april and now, De Nachtbrakers have changed completely. For a while its very existance was unspoken of.

But it has re-emerged, at least for now. For there have been many wonderful offers and chances: events and occassions that are now rapidly approaching along the timeline.

From this point I will try and keep you updated about all these things. I'm afraid it's no easy access Twitter-thing were you now what's going on in a single heartbeat; I need some space to write what I'm doing. I need the words, the spaces and the exclamation marks. For your enjoyment, but very much for my own enjoyment as well.

Keep you posted!

Jasper P. His shows vary from intimate and acoustic to wild and beat-driven. http://www.myspace.com/oliveroat

Have suitcase, will travel.

PFAFF (stories)
Our friendly neighbourhood psycho Pfaff will come in and enlighten us with a few stories. It made for a very spectacular, dynamic evening. 3voor12 popped in to write a piece about. Read it here

12 volunteers recruited by De Nachtbrakers were pretty much running the festival. A glorious day indeed...

Glorious also because there was some amazing music and literature going on! Featuring a few old friends (writers Pfaff, Maurice Seleky, Oscar Kocken & Ronald Snijders) and also many new ones (Spoelstra, Jasmine and the Jack Stafford Foundation, poet Jeroen van Rooy The Secret Love Parade, The Moi Non Plus and The Holy Orders to name a few).

All in all we had a blast. Thanks to Pfaff for being the mastermind and programming all these cool bands, and to our volunteers Joep, Anneke, Myra, Syb, housepoet Thijs, Boris, Hester,
Lieke, Denis, Moos and Johannes for their effort and enthusiasm. Great job everybody!

NEXT PARTY
The next party will be on May 1 at Winston Kingdom. Check back here soon for more info.

Cheers,

Jasper P. A lot of familiar faces popped in to see the bands and enjoy the good vibes. We feel priviliged to have shared all this great sounds with you all.

HENK

Henk drew some more: check it out: 3voor12

THANK YOU's

Gram started the festivities with some great tunes from her upcoming album. The acoustic setting is somewhat of a novelty, but Marg and Niels held their own with some great tunes. Great energy and the songs really make one curious about that album.. Meanwhile, check out Gram's website for all your voyeuristic needs. Thank you for sharing your new stuff!

Thijs van de Loo was on top form tuesday, a little nervous (it was his deflowering as a performing poet), but he definitely held his own. A lot of agreeing nods, a few smiles here and there, and some disgust: it's all part of the phenomenon that is Thijs. Something tells me we will be hearing a lot more from this guy...

Mindpark came all the way from Den Bosch (not Eindhoven) just to perform 4 songs for YOU, our lovely audience. But in just 4 acoustic/psychedelic ballads, they caught everyone's attention. It just goes to show these guys are up to the job wherever, whenever. Rocking it out or intimate performance: they'll leave any audience in awe. For those of you interested in how they sound as a full band: check out their performance of Wish at W2 in Den Bosch (youtube). Special thanks go out to Stephanie who acted as stand-in keyboard player and added some fantastic backing vocals. And of course to my long time friends Johan, Stijn & Ralph for driving over on a weeknight.

Awkward I ended the night in stile. His new band is ready and able, the songs are sound, and Djurre is still his charming self. The vocal harmonies were outstanding, the arrangements (featuring guitars, mandoline, philicordia, percussion and cello) are beautiful. This guy is ready to do great things. Rumour has it we won't be dissapointed. We were happy to have you Djurre, Diederik & Jelte, while we could still afford it.. By the way, they're playing a full set at De Nieuwe Anita on March 5th. Go check 'em out, I know I will..

A few more thank you's to Moos for handling mailinglist duties, Henk for drawing, Akim and 3voor12 for filming, Jeroen, Eelco & Maaike from De Nieuwe Anita for being such terrific hosts all month, to my fellow Nachtbrakers Hester, Denis, Iskra, Syb & Thijs for all their support, and to all the artists from Amarins to Maurice and from Starring Lisa to Apes in the Orange Grove.

And, off course, to all you sexy motherfuckers in the audience for coming week in week out, listen to me telling you to shut up and to drink, laugh, applaude, listen and just be in De Nieuwe Anita every tuesday. You're the reason we're doing all this and your happy faces makes it all worthwhile. You are all Nachtbrakers, and we hope you'll stick with us for more fun in the future.

Cheers and see you soon!

Jasper P. A sad occasion? Nope, because we have some great artists in store for you! Here’s the menu:

THIJS VAN DE LOO
Yes, finally: our house poet is taking the stage! Actually, young mr. Van de Loo is a student of Theatre Science and an actor. Tonight will be his first real go at performing his poetry in front of a live audience. But he’s up to the task. His in-your-face style of writing might be unsettling, but his words definitely hit home. It might be a bit rough around the edges, but this hardcore Nachtbraker has a talent for meaningful things to say.

He's not actually that greyish: it's called Sepia; a photo effect. Just so you know..

GRAM
Gram is the alter ego of a worker bee called Marg. Or should we say: chameleon? Gram started out as an electro-rockchick with band, then as a one-woman laptop/guitar act, but recently she has also performed with Rhodes and Baritone Saxophone (check it!), as an acoustic guitar duo, and as an unplugged ensemble with a string quartet. This lady knows her business, then!

Lately she has been working on her second album. This has turned De Nachtbrakers into a bunch of voyeurs: there’s a webcam in her home studio webcasting whenever she’s anywhere near the room. This Tuesday she’ll sample some new songs for our audience. How? I have no clue. But it promises to be good!

A peep inside Gram's home studio..

AWKWARD I
Djurre is without doubt a close ally for De Nachtbrakers. He helped us out with our first semi-acoustic edition at De Cantine, performed at the Rozentheater, and now he’s back for more! And rightfully so: Awkward I is the only act to have played both De Nachtbrakers and De Nieuwe Anita before. Djurre, one might say, is somewhat of a missing link.

Last October, Djurre brought his rootsy, bittersweet songs in an honest, straightforward solo setting. This Tuesday he’ll be on stage with his 4-piece band, adding to his sound and showcasing his skills as an arranger.

This night also serves as a rehearsal: Djurre is taking his show on the road! And not just anywhere: SXSW (South By Southwest) in Austin, Texas is one of the world’s greatest music exhibitions! A worthy Nachtbraker, then.

Djurre solo at De Nachtbrakers in October.
"Wot, no stupid comment?" Nope.

MINDPARK
Old friends with new names. You might recognize some of these lovely chaps from our party at Bitterzoet. Many years ago, these guys got a young music enthusiast involved in the music scene. It is one of the prime reasons De Nachtbrakers are here today. Since then, things have changed. But the friendship remained the same.

But hang on! This is not an acoustic band. These guys are heavy, alternative rock types. Spaced out synths and heavy distortion. Do they even know what an acoustic guitar looks like?

Well, yes and no: (semi-)acoustic gigs are a novelty in the current line up. And playing in such an intimate venue, with no backlight to hide behind, will be different. Showing their face is not their strong suit; they'd rather let the music speak for itself. But there’s definitely a soft side to these guys. And they're gonna show it.

This Tuesday they’ll show De Nieuwe Anita how it’s done. And perhaps, bringing some friends along for the ride…

Mindpark hiding in the dark...

That's all folks. Just one more party at De Nieuwe Anita.

SEE YOU TUESDAY!

Jasper P. So here they are.

First of all, my friends Apes In The Orange Grove. They brought their funky monkey grooves and great vocal harmonies to De Nieuwe Anita. Tom from Deccapods performed for the second time this month, this time bringing some magnificent clarinet as guest on “As We Speak”; very nice. Thanks, Joep, Gijs en Don!

Thanks also to Jan-Pieter, Uinko, Daan, Vincent and Shane. De Burmania’s are still at an early stage in the band process, but proved themselves worthy last Tuesday. I have no doubt there is a bright future in store for them.

Also, a short thank you to the staff at De Nieuwe Anita. They were on top of their game and kept their cool in front of a stampede of drinking, Amok-loving, brawling, mad Nachtbrakers. Great work everybody!

A thank you to the beautiful Iskra for handling the mailinglist (129 new signups so far this month!), our house poet Thijs for being such a hardcore motherfucker, and to Hester for keeping me sane in the days leading up to this very busy edition.

And last but certainly not least: The Amoks. We were honoured to be part of your ‘last stand’ sort to speak; a truly inspiring performance. From the amassed audience it’s easy to conclude that you will be missed. Good luck on any future musical ventures and feel free to contact us if you need a place to get the party started. Cheers Jeroen, Bone and Jan!

Did I forget anyone? Please take notice:
BE ON TIME: due to the Amoks reunion we are expecting a very big crowd. Please be on time to avoid disappointment at the door. Full = full.
Also, Ronald Snijders has been cancelled due to a change in schedule.

Right, now that's out of the way, let's get on with introductions. This week we have our fellow Nachtbraker Denis Wouters as a guest writer.

DE BURMANIA'S (link)

“Noeste Hollandse Jongens” (stern dutch boys). It’s a good description for De Burmania’s: hard working, musical young men, proud of their language and it’s cultural heritage. Without a doubt inspired by bards such as Herman van Veen, Spinvis and Boudewijn de Groot, the music of De Burmania’s has a familiar ring to it, but with a definite twist of their own. Whether it’s folk, rock, pop or indie: these guys simply weave all their influences together to create a diverse catalog of songs.

De Burmania’s are still a young band, but are well on their way. Just under a year in the process, they’re quickly developing into one of the finest new Dutch-language acts in the Netherlands. Their lyrical content is vivid, and they have many stories to tell. De Nachtbrakers clearly noticed this talented bunch and are happy to share them with you, our lovely audience.

Don't worry; we'll get these guys some better action shots.

APES IN THE ORANGE GROVE (link)

Fellow Nachtbraker Denis Wouters on Apes In The Orange Grove:

This trio will bring you a refreshing blend of reggae and rock with some folky, latin and bluesy flavors. I know, this doesn’t sound too unique...but sophisticated beats, strong melodies and subtle, layered arrangements (including all sorts of small instruments) and an ironic sense of humor make the Apes far more exciting than your average band from around the corner. Apart from that, this trio does not just sound relaxed, they really are!

Amplified or acoustic, the music of Apes in the Orange Grove sounds interesting either way. Even though they’ve played at bigger stages, small cozy pubs like De Nieuwe Anita are their specialty.

Winter is still holding Amsterdam in its grip, but this Tuesday you can prepare for spring at Anita's…wait, summer!

We're Apes In The Orange Grove and our songs go like: LALAAALAALAALALAALAALAAAALAAA

THE AMOKS (link)

Who are The Amoks? When first suggested to us by De Nieuwe Anita, we were clueless. According to their Myspace, they are deceased. Further investigation uncovered they have been for six years. It also said: “Bar Music”. Well that pretty much fits the bill. Listening, we found a rough-edged roots trio, who were in the business of getting the party going. Great. But what the f*ck are these dead guys doing at De Nachtbrakers then?

Well, it’s a sign of the times, I guess: De Nachtbrakers are hosting a reunion, people! The Amoks are back in business for just one night in their old home. For years these guys were kind of a resident band at De Nieuwe Anita. This Tuesday we come full circle as old tradition meets our new one at De Anita and make history together. And have a couple of drinks, for sure. Bring it on!

The Amoks will be playing a full set.

These Amoks do look kind of cool... for dead guys...

So, that's it for this week.

SEE YOU TUESDAY!

Jasper P. It's been an incredible two weeks, with nothing but enthusiasm from all involved. Turnout was again amazing. Never thought we were reaching this many people... These are truly special times for us here at Nachtbrakers HQ.

MIKA AKIMEN opened the night in style: he growled, hummed, screeched and played some impressive piano, too. With all his typical sarcasm and humour, he lived up to our expectations in his own unique way. He'll whip up anything from jazz to metal, indian drones & honkey tonk. But it's always opera. Love it. Thanks Akim! '

STARRING LISA changed things up as they always do: this time, two orange-juicers, a 70's drummachine (linked to wah pedal and delay: spaced out!), a toy keyboard and an excited new bassplayer were the main ingredients for a great display of indierock "with a twist of lemon". We're looking forward to the new album, which should be in stores in a month or so. Thanks Joost, Dave, Dennis and off course Alain (the newbee).

BELTER came all the way from London to play a few shows. Their mix of punk, wave, and rock really hit home. It wasn't really acoustic, save for Replacement Steve (drumming with bare hands on a snaredrum they found somewhere in the venue) but they got the job done. A very energetic performance indeed by this multinational London bunch. We're especially fond of 'Belt', which features some of the funkiest bass we've heard in a while. Thanks Angelo, Rob, Harsha, James and Replacement Steve!

Also thanks to our house poet Thijs, who did a great job handling mailinglist duties, and to Peter Menchetti, who turned up with a small portable record player and some very nice 50's/60's vinyl singles. Good fun indeed.

SEE YOU ALL NEXT WEEK!

Jasper P. At Nachtbrakers HQ we've dubbed this week (a clear reference to Zappa): "Shut up and play y'r guitar"-week.

But why?

Simple. We've got (indie)rock all the way this week! Fellow Nachtbraker Syb Woudstra introduces you to Mika Akimen, our old friends Starring Lisa are back for more, and writer and musician Pfaff (We Be Naked, The Ik Jan Cremers) shares his thoughts on our British guests Belter.

MIKA AKIMEN (myspace)

Our very own Sybren Woudstra is bang on the money:

"Haunting, humerous and hot, Mika Akimen brought his music to the city of Amsterdam years ago. It is said that he is in way too many bands, which confirms his interest in a great variety of music. Currently improving his skills at the conservatoire (Akim plays guitar, keytar and piano) he is ready to bring revolution to the underground music scene.

At the upcoming Nachtbrakers event he will be an eyecatcher. If the quality of music unheard of is one thing, then the way certain songwriters manage to transfer their songs to the audience is another. Akim enjoys himself on stage, and that joy is contagious. Listening to 'And I wait', a creepy, The Doors like atmosphere is conjured. Lingering strings support passionate vocals, honest words echoing through space.

Playing live, Akim succeeds in bringing the irony back to his heavy, even pretentious ideas. Many levels of consiousness weave through promising phrases of music. It's time to pray."

Mika Akimen molests his guitar

STARRING LISA (myspace)

Starring Lisa and De Nachtbrakers go way back. Early 2008, somewhere in Amsterdam a music enthousiast was looking for bands to play his new event at the infamous Winston Kingdom. He was looking for bite, originality, and stern musicianship.

Starring Lisa was exactly that. Four guys with a passion for honest, guitar-driven indierock. It was the first band outside our own social circle to get involved with De Nachtbrakers. And tonight they're back for more!

Starring Lisa will be showcasing songs from their upcoming debut album. It's also the first show with new member Alain on bass. This is special, because Starring Lisa actually met Alain at the first edition of De Nachtbrakers! The scene is set for a memorable evening...

Starring Lisa in: "How to catch a tan in Holland?"

BELTER (UK) (myspace)

We've asked friendly musician/writer/promoter Pfaff to give us a first impression. And, since this is an British band on a Dutch blog in English, it's only logical to post Pfaff's piece in Dutch. Enjoy!

Six guys crammed behind a small bar? I'm happy to report that it was a success. We've had a really good turnout, seen some amazing performances, and overall the atmosphere was great.

A few highlights:
* Anne brought along a cello player, which was a first. It really brought another layer of depth to her compositions. And yes, she got up close and personal.
* Maurice brought along a lot of friends, living up to his reputation as networking maniac. He also managed to keep the attention for a full 20 minutes with an outtake from his upcoming novel. We're very curious to read it cover to cover soon.
* Deccapods also played a great gig, despite a few problems with the sound balance. There was also an unannounced guest playing along on "Francis Machine"... Which you could say is more of a personal highlight for me.
* The 'Secret Act' was Amarins and her band Le Gatte Negre. Entertaining and moving as always, she showcased some material from her album "Incredibly close to the moon", which was released last thursday. No one guessed, so the secret prize remains a mistery..

On the downside, we still need to whip all this new audience into shape. De Nieuwe Anita is a unique venue with really simple rules, but it takes some getting used to.

Two pointers for people who've never been to De Nieuwe Anita
* If you see the guy with the hat collecting money for the bands, PAY THE MAN. You're getting free entry, so just drop a few euros for your entertainment.
* De Nieuwe Anita prides itself on the attention of the audience for the acts that are playing. Respect the house rules and be quiet. If you feel like talking, take your conversations to the back room.

Thanks a lot to Anne, Mascha, Maurice, Tom, Massey, Hanno, Floor, Amarins, Femke, Tycho and Alessandro for a flying start of this month's festivities.

That's it for now, hope to see you somewhere in the coming month.

Love,

Jasper P. We wanted to change things up a bit. So we've invited some interesting guests to come and contribute their thoughts with us on some of the acts for that week.

This week we've invited Gijs from Apes In The Orange Grove to share his thoughts on Deccapods. And you'll find some very personal introductions of Anne, Maurice, and the Secret Act!

ANNE ROOS ROSA DE CARVALHO

Big name, small show. Anne (that’s the only bit that counts as a first name) is essentially a one-woman show, with a theatrical touch. But it packs a punch! Heartfelt, powerful lyrics sung with a voice that can sound strong and soulful, but also small and vulnerable. Just sit her down behind the piano and let her pour all her misery, anger, hope, punchlines, doubt and irony over you. With her in-your-face songs and podium presence she can leave any room in awe, and slightly uncomfortable...

This Tuesday she gets up close and personal. Not for the weak hearted perhaps, but that’s just her way of doing things: she won’t sugarcoat a damn thing. Just the way we like it..

Anne rules the waves!

MAURICE SELEKY

This young literary talent is always in the right place. Wherever exciting new things are happening, Maurice will show up at one point. The reason for this is because Maurice knows everybody. As such, it didn't take long for De Nachtbrakers to appear on his radar. From the start, we were impressed by this guy's energy and enthusiasm. And Maurice Seleky likes his rock 'n roll. Always a good thing.

This Tuesday he will share with us his "Cool Noir"-stories. Dark tales of modern life, the black borders of love and the quest for happiness in the 21st century. Maurice is also working on his first novel, which is supposed to hit bookstores in 2010.

"Maurice Seleky with camera"

DECCAPODS

Gijs, singer/guitarist of Apes In The Orange Grove, commented:

“Listening to Deccapods is both a trip through a wide array of musical genres, and a rather mesmerizing jump-cut journey through time. Theirmusic is "academic" in a way similar to the early Genesis albums, with songs about specific historical events like the Napoleonic Wars or hurricane Katrina, but somehow they always manage to keep their progressive rock light and accessible.

Every song is essentially a four-minute concept album in the vein of Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds," which makes Deccapods something of an anomaly in the current music landscape. I mean, there's not a lot of bands these days that will inform you of the dangers of approaching comets in one song, and of the beauty of the deepest depths of the ocean in the next. But leave it to Deccapods to take you there.”

Deccapods unique selling point #234598234b: "have clarinet, will travel"

THE SECRET ACT

No, this isn’t a very silly name for a band. It’s exactly what it says: it means I’m not going to tell you what it is. Some things are best kept secret. So the only thing you can do, is come see and find out. I’ll tell you this though: curiosity will be rewarded. Don’t act as if you don’t want to know. You want me to give it up; well my lips are sealed. One hint? It’s good music. Our JANUARI edition is CANCELLED. Just to get that out of the way.

First musical thoughts of the year
It's kind of a common tradition to reflect on the year that has passed at Christmas and look forward to the year ahead. For me a big part of this means setting new musical goals. This year, I tried to figure out what I was looking for musically with De Nachtbrakers. What defines the best in underground? It's quite difficult to put your finger on. Is it a matter of public opinion? Consensus? And what are the parameters.

I found a clue discussing the "Grote Prijs van Nederland" (a nationwide music competition) with a friend of mine, a singer-songwriter who has had her share of experience with these kind of affairs. We agreed that we both didn't like the winners over the past few years as much as some of the other contestants/finalists. It's likely the jury is looking for a commercial sound, something that combines selling records with a certain quality.

My friend and I share a different perspective. We're looking for authenticity, musicality, something extraordinary. That's what makes my job so exciting. I feel like the great traveller's of old; discovering new corners of the earth. They were looking for silk and a fast route to India, I am looking for music. I am Marco Polo with an electric guitar. I am! Really! You can imagine disovering something that sounds like anything you've heard many times before is not nearly as exciting.

So, does being underground mean competing in the finals of the "Grote Prijs van Nederland" but not winning it? It's difficult to say. In the case of the songwriter competition; I would prefer Robin Block or The Woodwards over Fabiana Dammers any time. They choose to follow their own road, despite of reason or the suggestion of success.

Coming up:
In Februari De Nachtbrakers will be hosting acoustic sessions at De Nieuwe Anita in Amsterdam every tuesday night. It's free entry, so if you're in the neighbourhood... I'm looking forward to giving you my view on what's good (& acoustic) in 2009.

Happy New Year!

Jasper

New Events!

We're hosting a bunch of new events early 2009.
